How to Choose the Right Intruder Alarm Grade for Your Home
Published 1 July 2025
When you start researching house alarms, you’ll encounter terms like “Grade 2”, “Grade 3”, and “EN 50131”. These aren’t marketing labels — they’re strict technical standards that determine how well your system protects your property.
Understanding alarm grades helps you buy the right system, satisfy your insurer, and avoid paying for protection you don’t need.
What is EN 50131?
I.S. EN 50131-1 is the European standard for intruder alarm systems. It defines four grades, each designed to resist a different level of threat. In Ireland, all professional alarm installations should comply with this standard.
The overall grade of a system is limited by its lowest-graded component — so using a Grade 3 panel with Grade 2 sensors results in a Grade 2 system. This is why professional design matters.
The Four Alarm Grades Explained
Grade 1 — Low Risk
- Threat level: Opportunist thief with no knowledge of alarm systems
- Typical use: Basic residential deterrent
- Features: Simple detection, audible alarm only
- Insurance: Rarely accepted by insurers for anything other than basic cover
Grade 2 — Low to Medium Risk ⭐ Most Common
- Threat level: Opportunist thief with some knowledge of alarms, limited tools
- Typical use: Most homes and small businesses in Ireland
- Features: Must connect to an Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC), battery backup, tamper protection on all devices
- Insurance: Standard requirement for most home and business policies
Grade 2 is the default choice for most Galway homeowners. It provides robust protection without unnecessary cost.
Grade 3 — Medium to High Risk
- Threat level: Experienced burglar with tools and knowledge of alarm systems
- Typical use: High-value homes, commercial premises with expensive stock, premises in higher-risk areas
- Features: Anti-masking detection (detects if a sensor is covered), enhanced supervision, additional communication paths
- Insurance: Required for higher-value contents or commercial premises
Grade 4 — High Risk
- Threat level: Professional criminals, organised crime
- Typical use: Banks, jewellers, high-security facilities
- Features: Maximum detection, redundant communication, anti-tamper at every level
- Insurance: Specialist requirement, rarely needed for residential
Which Grade Does Your Insurer Require?
Most Irish home insurance policies that specify an alarm require Grade 2 as a minimum. Some policies for high-value homes may require Grade 3.
Always check your policy wording. Look for terms like:
- “Approved alarm system”
- “Connected to a monitoring station”
- “Grade 2 to EN 50131”
- “Installed by a PSA-licensed contractor”
At Centaur Alarms, we provide a certificate of compliance with every installation, which you can submit to your insurer.
How We Determine the Right Grade for Your Property
During our free site survey, we assess:
- Property type and location: Isolated rural properties face different risks than city-centre apartments
- Value of contents: Higher-value homes may warrant Grade 3
- Previous incidents: Repeat target properties need enhanced protection
- Insurance requirements: We check your policy wording
- Business use: Commercial premises almost always need Grade 2 or 3
What We Document
For every installation, we provide:
- System grade certificate
- Component grading list (every sensor, panel, and siren)
- Environmental class assessment
- Installation compliance certificate
- PSA licence details (No. 96)
This documentation satisfies insurers, satisfies the standard, and gives you peace of mind.
The Hidden Cost of Under-Grading
If your insurer requires Grade 2 and you install a Grade 1 system (or a DIY kit), you may:
- Have insurance claims rejected
- Pay higher premiums
- Void your policy entirely
The small extra cost of a properly graded system is insignificant compared to the risk of an insurance dispute.
